General information about the Lean methodology

Today, the definition of a problem has become, because of the highly competitive scenario, much more inviting. The big secret is in facing the problem as an opportunity! Thus, the motivation of the team and the whole company to win it becomes greater.

Have you stopped to think about the complexity of processes, products, suppliers, employees, and customers that companies have? The relationship between them and the performance of each can be measured through performance indicators, correct?

Now imagine putting all this performance to the limit, what would happen?

Certainly, the company that would get this achievement would not have any problem growing exponentially and constantly in the market.

However, to approach this target it is necessary to adopt a strategy - currently, the method that we perceive a greater use and has been very widespread is the project Lean Six Sigma.

This is a continuous improvement methodology that, through the Lean Six Sigma project, seeks to increase the company's performance and final result by attacking where the most important opportunities are.

Let me give you an example to make things clearer: there is no point in improving a company's B-sector production capacity from 70 to 100 units per hour if its predecessor, Sector-A, operates at its capacity limit of producing only 30 units per hour.

To really find out where the main and most profitable opportunities are - in addition to several other important observations to look at before and during project development - I have listed some information. Let's see?

Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma

1. Preference for critical customers, operations or products

As we have just discovered, with the example of sectors A and B, the focus should always be on the final result - only then can a company achieve competitive advantage over competitors.

To identify the key processes and discover how value flows in your operations, you can adopt a lean tool called Value Stream Mapping (VSM).

The Lean Six Sigma project enables this scope of application, it is no wonder that any sector of a company can adopt it, from the areas of Marketing and IT to Production and Maintenance, for example.

It is also good to make clear: financial return, sometimes, should not be the only focus. For example, areas such as Workplace Safety and the Environment, even if they do not collaborate directly with finances, are essential to keep employees, customers, suppliers and all other involved satisfied with the level of attention and commitment that the company also has with this.

2. Evaluate the history of data and initial information

During the development of the scope of the Lean Six Sigma project, seek to evaluate in advance whether the data and information system used is reliable. Imagine reaching the end of your project and finding that the data used for decisions were not true. This can become a problem, huh?

The statistical tool used to ensure that information used in your Lean Six Sigma project is consistent is called Measurement System Analysis (MSA). It costs nothing to check in advance if the project has an adequate database and information, right?

3. Establish Performance metrics

Performance metrics are the popular KPI'S (Key Performance Indicators). In this step, it is worth using any metrics that allow you, at the end of your project, to compare the results before and after. The indicators 6 Sigma, CPK and OEE are very common in the industrial environment.

4. Choose projects that are feasible for your cronogram.

Green Belt projects typically last 4 to 6 months while Black Belt up to 8 months. You may have the following question: So, I can't adopt a project with an estimated duration greater than 1 year?

This is not what the Lean Six Sigma program recommends. It prefers to work intensely and accurately to get the earliest possible return on the investment made since large projects can be broken down into several smaller projects.

This is perhaps one of the valuable reasons for the success of the methodology, so the team designated as responsible for achieving the project goal remains more united and engaged.

5. Build trust with who will sponsor the project

Every project in Lean Six Sigma has a sponsor of the area involved.

This professional is responsible for ensuring that relationship problems and investment needs are resolved as quickly as possible, not impacting the delivery times of each stage of the project.

It is very important to gain the trust of the designated sponsor for your project since it is he who will help you with hierarchical and communication problems - if there are such needs obviously. To gain this confidence, demonstrate autonomy in the subject and to always reveal in advance how the gains he will have in his industry can help.
